Choosing the Right Tablecloth
Good advice, beautiful linens, and a tablecloth that actually fits.
Buying a tablecloth should be a pleasure, but there are a few things worth thinking through before you fall in love with a pattern.
At Welcome Home, we help guests choose table linens every day, and our first question is rarely about color. We usually begin with something much simpler: Tell us about your table, and how you use it.
Is this the table where your family eats breakfast every morning? A dining room table reserved for dinner parties? A sunny kitchen table that sees everything from homework to cocktails? Or an outdoor table where you gather with friends all summer?
The answers help us find the right fabric, size, and style. And with collections from Garnier-Thiebaut, Le Jacquard Français, Busatti, Couleur Nature, Pomegranate, and June & December, we have plenty of beautiful possibilities to consider.
First, Think About How You'll Use Your Tablecloth
Before choosing a fabric or pattern, we like to understand what life looks like around your table.
For everyday meals, ease of care is often just as important as appearance. You may want something you can use regularly, wash without much fuss, and put right back on the table.
For a formal dining room, you might prefer a beautiful woven jacquard or traditional Italian linen with a little more substance and drape.
If you're entertaining outdoors, the practical considerations change. Spills, moisture, sun, and the occasional gust of wind all deserve a little thought.
There's no single correct choice. The best tablecloth is the one that works for your table and the way you enjoy using it.
Choosing the Right Fabric
French Jacquard: Beautiful Patterns Woven Into the Cloth
If you love a tablecloth with rich color, intricate patterns, and a beautiful drape, we often begin with Garnier-Thiebaut or Le Jacquard Français.
Both French textile houses are known for their jacquard weaving, a technique in which the pattern is woven directly into the fabric rather than printed on the surface.
The result is a cloth with wonderful depth and texture. Depending on the design, it can feel beautifully traditional or surprisingly contemporary.
French jacquards are among our favorite choices for dining rooms, holiday tables, and anyone who appreciates the pleasure of setting a beautiful table.
They're also much too lovely to save only for holidays.
Acrylic-Coated Jacquard: Practical Without Looking Practical
For busy family tables, vacation homes, and outdoor dining, we often suggest looking at the acrylic-coated jacquard collections from Garnier-Thiebaut and Le Jacquard Français.
These fabrics retain the character and pattern of a woven French tablecloth while adding a protective coating that makes everyday spills easier to manage.
They're particularly appealing for a kitchen table that gets used several times a day or a patio table where people are eating, drinking, and enjoying themselves.
And there's another useful option: both Garnier-Thiebaut and Le Jacquard Français can create custom umbrella-hole openings in select acrylic-coated jacquard tablecloths.
If your outdoor table has an umbrella, we can help you select an appropriate fabric, determine the size, and arrange the special opening.
A coated tablecloth can be a good choice for outdoor meals, but we'd still recommend bringing it inside when it's not in use rather than leaving it exposed to prolonged sun and weather. Care requirements vary by fabric and finish.
Italian Linen and Cotton: Natural Texture and Timeless Character
If you prefer the feel of natural fibers and a more relaxed, beautifully lived-in table, we love Busatti.
This family-owned Italian textile company has been weaving fabrics in Anghiari, Tuscany, since 1842. Its linen and cotton textiles have a wonderful weight and character, with woven stripes, checks, and patterns that feel equally at home in a country kitchen or a more formal dining room.
We carry Busatti tablecloths, placemats, and napkins, including smaller squares, 106-inch rectangles, and 106-inch rounds.
Busatti is also an excellent choice when you need a custom size, as additional dimensions, colors, and patterns can be ordered.
And if you enjoy the relaxed look of linen, remember that a few natural wrinkles are part of its charm. Not every table needs to look freshly pressed for a state dinner.
Printed Table Linens: Color, Personality, and a More Relaxed Mood
Sometimes what a table needs is a wonderful print.
Our collections from Couleur Nature, Pomegranate, and June & December bring a different character to the table, with botanical motifs, expressive colors, and nature-inspired designs.
Printed linens can be particularly lovely in kitchens, breakfast rooms, and casual dining spaces. They also work beautifully with simple white dishes, collected pottery, or everyday stoneware.
We often suggest starting with a pattern you love and then choosing napkins, placemats, and serving pieces that complement it.
The result should feel personal, not overly coordinated.
Indoor or Outdoor? A Few Things to Consider
If you're shopping for an outdoor tablecloth, we'll ask a few additional questions.
Is the table under a covered porch or fully exposed? Will the cloth be used for occasional dinners or left on the table regularly? Does the table have an umbrella?
For outdoor entertaining, acrylic-coated French jacquards are often a particularly practical option. They're easy to wipe down after a meal, and select fabrics can be special-ordered with an umbrella opening.
For a covered porch or an occasional outdoor gathering, traditional cotton or linen can also be beautiful, provided you're comfortable with the care they require.
We'll help you weigh appearance against practicality, because a tablecloth should make entertaining easier, not give you something else to worry about.
Formal or Casual? It's Really About Your Style
We don't believe formal and casual have to be opposites.
A richly patterned Garnier-Thiebaut tablecloth can look wonderful with everyday pottery. A simple Busatti linen can feel elegant with fine china and candlelight. A cheerful Couleur Nature print can make an ordinary lunch feel like an occasion.
When helping a guest choose, we often look at the dishes they already own.
Do you have traditional china with a pattern? Simple white plates? Colorful handmade ceramics? A collection of pieces you've gathered over the years?
Your tablecloth doesn't have to match everything. It should bring the table together while leaving room for your own personality.
How to Measure Your Table for a Tablecloth
This is where a little planning makes all the difference.
We always recommend measuring the table rather than relying on its description as a six-person or eight-person table. Tables vary enormously, even when they seat the same number of people.
Here's what we'll ask you to measure.
Rectangular and Oval Tables
Measure the length and width of your tabletop, including any extension leaves you expect to use.
Then decide how far you'd like the tablecloth to hang over the edges. This is called the drop. For many everyday tables, a drop of 8 to 12 inches is a comfortable starting point. For more formal settings, you may prefer a longer drop.
To calculate the tablecloth size, add twice the desired drop to both the length and width of the table.
For example, a table measuring 40 inches wide by 72 inches long with a 10-inch drop would need a tablecloth approximately 60 by 92 inches.
For oval tables, we also consider the shape of the corners and whether you prefer an oval or rectangular cloth.
Round Tables
Measure the diameter of your tabletop at its widest point. Then add twice your desired drop. For example, a 60-inch round table with a 10-inch drop would need an 80-inch round tablecloth.
If you have a pedestal table, a particularly wide table, or an unusual base, we may suggest adjusting the drop for comfort and appearance.
Don't Forget the Chairs
We also like to consider how the cloth will fall when people are seated. A very long drop can be beautiful, but it may not be practical if it bunches in guests' laps or interferes with chair arms. If you're considering a floor-length cloth for a special occasion, we'll help you think through those details as well.
What If My Table Isn't a Standard Size?
This is one of the reasons we love working with our European linen makers.
Garnier-Thiebaut, Le Jacquard Français, and Busatti all offer custom-cut tablecloths.
That means we can help with unusually long dining tables, large round tables, special dimensions, and sizes that aren't commonly available in stores.
For outdoor tables, Garnier-Thiebaut and Le Jacquard Français also offer umbrella-hole openings in select acrylic-coated jacquard fabrics.
We'll help you review the available options, confirm the dimensions, and understand the special-order process.
You don't have to solve the sizing problem on your own.
What to Bring When You Visit Welcome Home
You don't need a folder full of plans, although we're always happy to look at one.
A few things can make our conversation especially useful:
-
Your table's measurements, including any extension leaves
-
A photograph of the table and dining room
-
A picture of the dishes or serving pieces you use most often
-
An idea of whether the cloth is for everyday meals, entertaining, or outdoor use
-
Any colors or patterns you're particularly drawn to
If you don't have all of that, don't worry. We can start with what you know and work from there.
